The Aberdeen Depot became known as the Pheasant Canteen and presidents Eisenhower and then-candidate Truman both served sandwiches at the Canteen. Today, locals keep this tradition alive by making sandwiches with the exact same WW II recipe, but instead of gifting the sandwiches to soldiers, they give them out to pheasant hunters arriving for opening weekend of pheasant hunting at the local airport. Pheasant sandwich making volunteer coordinator and director of the Aberdeen Visitors Bureau, Casey Weismantel, tells Capri the story of the Pheasant Canteen and shows her how to make the original pheasant salad sandwich.
